A Mt. Orab man who pleaded guilty to stealing a minivan and attempting to ditch it by Lake Grant was sentenced to prison on Thursday, April 7.
Michael Wayne Liming, age 48, entered a guilty plea in Brown County Common Pleas Court to one count each of fourth-degree felony grand theft of a motor vehicle and fifth-degree felony theft.
The fifth-degree felony theft conviction is related to a separate incident in which Liming allegedly stole an EBT card from a woman’s vehicle while she worked at the Mt. Orab McDonald’s, according to court documents.
At sentencing, prosecutors recommended Liming should serve a total of 16 months in prison for the offenses, to which the judge agreed.
Judge Scott Gusweiler handed Liming a sentence of 16 months in prison for the motor vehicle theft, to run concurrent with a 10 month sentence for the EBT card theft, and an optional three years of post-release control.
Liming was accused of stealing a maroon 1997 Dodge Caravan on the afternoon of Dec. 22, 2015, from the parking lot of the Mt. Orab Family Dollar at 400 N. High Street.
According to an affidavit filed in Brown County Municipal Court, the vehicle was reported stolen at 3:10 p.m. and located by Ptl. Justin Conley at 3:52 p.m. The victim, a Family Dollar employee, told police the vehicle had been stolen between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.
The affidavit says Conley located the vehicle, along with Liming and Valerie Wachter, at an access to Lake Grant. Liming and Wachter allegedly admitted to stealing
the van so they did not have to walk back to their motel room, the affidavit says.
The two allegedly unloaded items they stole from Kroger and inside the van at Greencrest Motel before taking the van to Lake Grant and attempting to ditch it, according to the affidavit.
In February, Wachter pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony receiving stolen property for her role in the theft and an unrelated charge for chemicals to manufacture methamphetamine. She was ordered to serve up to six months at the STAR Community Justice Center and two years of community control.
Liming has a long criminal history, with convictions for burglary, theft and assault dating back to 1986.
