A Brown County woman was shot on Friday evening, Oct 16 during a struggle for a stolen firearm, local media reported.
The woman, identified as Teva Highfield, age 39, was in her vehicle following the suspect, identified as Christopher Turner, age 26, when she confronted him about the gun at the intersection of SR 32 and Olive Branch-Stonelick Road in Batavia Township, Clermont County. She accused Turner of breaking into her home in Sardinia, Brown County, and stealing the firearm.
Highfield walked up to Turner’s vehicle as the two were stopped at a traffic light, and the verbal argument turned physical when she began to struggle with the suspect over the firearm. A round discharged, striking Highfield in the hand.
Highfield then went to the nearby Clermont Mercy Hospital, who contacted AirCare to fly her to University Hospital. Officials said her injuries were not serious or life-threatening.
Turner is being held in the Clermont County Jail on $50,000 bond, charged with fourth-degree felony improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle. He is set to appear in court on Monday morning, Oct 19, and more charges could be pending.
